Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This day commemorates Canada’s brutal legacy of Indigenous child genocide, those who survived and those who never made it back home to their families. Orange Shirt Day originated from a former student and survivor, Phylis Webstad. While attending St. Joseph's Mission Residential School, Phylis was so excited to wear an orange shirt her grandmother had bought for her. But the shirt was snatched away and Phylis was forced to wear the school’s uniform. Webstad said “this was the beginning of that feeling that I didn’t matter.”
